On Saturday 7th September 2024, a group of us took on a challenging hike across the Shropshire Hills to raise money for Men Walking and Talking.
Starting at 06:50 and finishing at 18:28 we covered 22 miles and ascended over 3,500ft. We began the day in very challenging foggy conditions, which made for an interesting few hours to say the least. After ascending The Shooting Box, we then descended into Carding Mill Valley and on through Church Stretton to take on Caer Caradoc Hill, after a much needed rest we pushed on.
At the first arranged pit-stop in Cardington, we made some changes to the pre-planned route due to lost time on the hills in the morning. By late afternoon we were back on track and made it to the 2nd pit-stop.
We then all took on the last challenging stage from Little Stretton back to camp in Rattlinghope. This last stage was mostly uphill and took us to the summit of Pole Bank and on to complete the hike.
Back at camp and after many handshakes and pats on the back, we all enjoyed a refreshing beverage or two. Very well deserved. Congratulations guys and thank you so so much to Andy and Arran for their support during the day and evening. Best vegetable soup ever!
During the course of the day I witnessed many acts of support and brotherhood, which typifies what this organisation stands for. Supporting your fellow man in times of need. For some of the guys that took part in this hike, it was a great personal challenge, walking distances and climbing up hills that they had never before attempted and they did it all with a smile on their faces (most of the time anyway)
On the last section of the day, it became more of a mental battle than a physical one and yet again, everyone rose to the challenge.
As of writing this this article we have currently raised over £1,500 which will go towards the running of our activities and groups.
So, onto the next challenge…watch this space and thank you again for all of your support, we could not do this without you.
